Reader question:

For what reasons can your car insurance policy be cancelled?

Aggie

Good question.

There are several reasons, actually, and very different ones.

  • You didn’t pay your premium. If you don’t pay your premium, then you don’t get a warning like you might in other cancellation situations. Your car insurance policy is cancelled that same day, and it is not renewed until you pay. However, even if you are able to pay, many companies would not renew your policy after a cancellation for nonpayment.
  • Your driver’s license is suspended or revoked. This usually happens if you do something such as get convicted for drunk driving or have several speeding tickets. Your car insurance company will give you a warning in this case.
  • At any point during the first two months. The first sixty days that you have a car insurance policy, they are sill researching you. If they find that you have given them incorrect information, or they just find something they don’t like, then they can advise you that they are going to cancel your auto insurance policy.
