Car insurance collision appraisal
If your car is considered a total loss, is it required that you sign a proof of loss after the settlement amount is decided, or do you only need to sign the final check to wrap things up?

I’m very glad that you asked that.
The truth is that neither is a required act after your vehicle has been declared a total loss in a car insurance collision. All you need to do is turn over the ability to make a final decision to the person appraising your vehicle. Once this is done, all they have to do is determine the amount and then sign the amount and finish it themselves with no requirements from you. After this happens, though, that is generally considered by civil courts to be the end of the entire affair, and thus you will not be able to continue with your dispute once it is considered to be binding.
One thing that I believe that you should think about, though, is what proof you are required to have by your state as to your lack of auto insurance coverage. Some states are much more strict than others, and such states often require that you provide some sort of documentation that you are, for some reason, exempt from the mandatory auto insurance coverage laws. One such piece of documentation would be a proof of loss document, which you would provide to the department of motor vehicles so that there would not be any confusion.
