Car insurance claim report

Reader question:

Say you get into a vehicle collision, but nobody calls to get a police report done. Still, you file a car insurance claim and get a settlement. Does this go on your record and make your rates go up?

Anthony

Thank you for asking that, Anthony.

Actually, it really depends on what car insurance company you are with, as all have their different policies. However, I would wager that with most it would go on your car insurance report in some way, although how permanent it would be is entirely up for grabs. The possibility of a rate increase depends on how many car insurance claims you have filed with that company. If this is youtr first one, then most good companies will forgive you the accident and it will have no negative effect on your car insurance premium rates. However, if you have had other accidents before this, then you risk a rise in your car insurance premium as well as the loss of some good driver discounts.

As for how this car insurance claim will follow you outside of your current insurance company, again, it all depends. Many companies have different ways of reporting claims so that they stay on your record or not. If the car accident is not on your actual driving record, then it might do you harm. However, if not, there is still a chance that your car insurance company will report the accident to the CLUE organization.

What is a CLUE report? It’s basically a list of accidents that they have on you, sort of like a credit report in the world of the insurance company, and many vehicle insurance companies use it as a frame of reference when deciding what to charge you on your premiums. Not all car insurance companies report claims to this organization, just as not all companies will check them when getting you your policy.
