Reader question:

If my spouse dies, then will my auto insurance pay off the rest of our car?

George

Thank you for your question, George.

Although I think you are looking in the wrong place. There are a couple of instances where your auto insurance coverage might have something to do with the fate of your car after a spousal death, but not just in a general one as you describe. I think it would all depend on whose name the car is in and what kind or pre nuptial agreement. If you have an agreement that you will not take on any of your spouse’s debts, then you are free of that unless you want to keep the car, in which case you would still have to pay it. If your name is on the car, it would depend. Some car lots offer provisions for this. I know that on the vehicle that my husband and I own together, if one of us were to die then the surviving spouse would not be required to make any more payments.

However, this type of coverage is not offered with auto insurance coverage. Actually, the only way that you could pay off your car if your spouse died would be if your spouse died in a car accident and you have enough coverage. If your spouse died in a car accident, then it would probably be very likely that the car would be totaled too, in which case it would be covered by the other driver’s liability or by your own collision and gap coverage.

Cheers,

Fashun Guadarrama.
